When I first began my position as the Technology Specialist for the public library, our computers were in terrible disrepair and old. They broke down a lot, and often, they took anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes to start up. I made this sign to put on the computers when they were out of service. I was quickly told not to be so creative. But in my heart, I still have fondness for this sign and wish I would be allowed to use it now. Though, the need is far more infrequent these days.

A large picture of Shel Silverstein on a paper sign that reads: We're sorry. Computer out of service. Here's a picture of famous children's author, playwright, and poet, Shel Silverstein, instead.

We now have Drag and Drop support for the Post Composer!

You can now drag and drop multiple images at once into the Post Composer rather than having to add each image one by one, locating each image in a file browser on your computer. Just drag and drop, then add your alt text as usual!

The same is true for videos, but only one video can be added to a post at a time.

This new feature even works for text and markdown files! Drag and drop text or markdown files into the Post Composer to instantly create new text blocks with the file's contents!

Exclamation points!!!!!

I'm currently debugging the video uploader and video content blocks. Please feel free to upload videos and help report any issues! The file limit is currently 10.5 minutes / 0.5GB per video.

I think... I think that I fixed video uploads. Let's make this a multimedia post with an image after this.

Let's see if this post with multiple content blocks works!

We have a new feature! This one is important.

Export Your Data!

I don't believe in locking users into a given platform. That's why one of the first priorities on the feature list for this platform has been data export.

The way it works is this: You can request a Data Export (limited to once every 24 hours, which should be more than often enough!). The export includes a simple, self-contained file named index.html, and you can open it in any web browser to view your posts chronologically.

For the nerds:

The data will also be available as subfolders for each post, named by date/timestamp of the post. Each post folder has a markdown file you can open in any text editor, and it will have the content of the post (as however it displayed on the site at the time of the export).

These timestamped folders and markdown files are useful for if you ever need to take your data elsewhere.

In addition, there's metadata about the post, its Post ID on YA.town, for example, and a markdown table at the bottom listing all media that was uploaded and used.

The images themselves are stored in the post folder beside the post's markdown text file.

The format of a post's export file (example.md) looks like the following:
